Not long ago, a private equity
consultant told his clients that the middle market buyout world is too
crowded. As a result, he advised them to focus their attention on small/micro
funds or large/mega funds.
His message is completely lost on Geoff Rehnert. The sweet spot for his
Audax Group is the middle market, and the firm is thriving there. “We
see ourselves as guys who can take a company from one level, and bring
it somewhere new. It’s a team-oriented high-intensity gang-tackle
approach. We don’t look back over our shoulders at our competition.”
In his Capital Roundtable presentation (a rare public appearance), Mr.
Rehnert will discuss Audax’s game plan and its history. “We’ve
learned a lot since we launched our first fund five years ago, and as
a result we’ve significantly evolved our strategy.” Now the
firm’s private equity group is raising another $600 million fund,
and later this year its mezzanine group expects to add a similar sized
fund.
Previously Mr. Rehnert was a general partner at Bain Capital Inc., which
he helped to start in 1984. He has served as a director of more than thirty
public and privately held companies. He also worked as a consultant at
Bain & Co. and as a commercial banker with J. P. Morgan & Co.
He earned a law degree from the Stanford University in 1984 and an A.
B. in economics from Duke University in 1979.
