All segments of the financial industry have a lot at stake in the upcoming elections. And despite the relative calm in the private equity arena, middle-market p.e. firms aren’t immune to political trends.

The tax treatment on carried interest … the prospect of regulation … credit availability … access to lawmakers … They’re all critical, and they’re all in play.

With these and other issues keeping us guessing, wouldn’t it be valuable for us to have a town forum where McCain and Obama agreed to field questions from an audience of PE professionals?

And wouldn’t it be even better if after that town forum there was an open-bar cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception where you can visit with your friends?

There’s good news.

On Tuesday afternoon, October 21, The Capital Roundtable is hosting the next best thing --   a very special MasterForum on

“Private Equity Faces the National Elections –

How We Can Navigate the Political Waters

in the Middle of a Financial Storm”

This is a one-time event featuring a panel of four senior private equity experts – all of whom are experienced in politics and government.

Each is going to offer their close-up view of future legislation related to private equity. And more importantly, what the industry’s game plan ought to be.

You don’t want to miss out on answers to questions like these …

  • With the credit squeeze continuing to worsen despite all the aggressive moves by the Fed, what remedies can we expect from each prospective administration?
  • What is the most credible case the industry can make to an Obama administration to avoid a wholesale change in carried-interest taxation?  And most important, will it convince?
  • What would be the effect on public pension funds (some say “catastrophic”) if current tax treatment changes? And can a Republican presidency really stave off the growing sentiment in Congress for carried-interest reform?
  • Could compensation of fund managers, generally, come under closer scrutiny, given some of today’s Midas-like returns in largely unregulated “private” equity?
  • How can Washington’s view of private equity be better managed, especially with both parties depending heavily on Wall Street heavyweights for key cabinet posts (Hank Paulsen, Robert Rubin, etc.)
  • Could the “green theme” being embraced by influential PE players (like NY’s Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, UK’s Doughty Hanson, and Silicon Valley’s Kleiner Perkins), in turn influence opinion of private equity on Capital Hill?
  • Will some form of government-administered universal healthcare dampen or brighten profits in the healthcare / medical device sectors?  And who really has the plan that will still keep these industries invigorated?
  • What will the favorability quotient be toward other industries like housing, traditional energy,  manufacturing,  big agriculture, and IT in the two administrations … and how will it be demonstrated?

Got your own tough questions? Get non-equivocal answers by some of the best-connected professionals straddling the two worlds of Washington politics and private equity.

And please be sure to stick around after the panel for the open-bar cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception!
