Calling a demographic group of this size a “minority” seems wholly inadequate.
Indeed, the incredible growth and trajectory of the U.S. Latino marketplace is more appropriately being dubbed the Hispanization of American commerce.
Look around you … hundreds of business segments now serve this population’s many ethnocentric preferences and appetites. This year, no fewer than one out of every three U.S. enterprises opening for business is Hispanic-owned.
The picture is clear for P.E. investors -- this is a market worth knowing much more about. Opportunities for acquiring and growing Hispanic-owned companies abound … but only if you have the requisite savvy to gain entry.
Here are some initial myths and realities to understand about the U.S. Hispanic mega-market --
MYTH: Hispanics don’t have a lot of money to spend.
Reality: Hispanic businesses cater to more than 50 million U.S. Latinos who inject more than $860 billion a year in disposable income into the economy. Latinos dominate the value marketplace for every consumer product category.
MYTH: Hispanics are mostly transitory with many illegals moving in and out of the country.
Reality: The vast majority of Hispanics are legal citizens and have been raising families in this country for generations. The U.S. Hispanic population is now the second largest in the world, next to Mexico’s. Today every other newborn American is of Hispanic descent.
MYTH: Hispanics are becoming more Americanized so there’s less need to focus on ethnic tastes.
Reality: While embracing American life, Hispanics take tremendous pride in their heritage. And because of their massive numbers in the urban youth market, they’re making their ethnic tastes the hip, cool mainstream.
MYTH: Hispanic-owned businesses are still too small to be attractive to middle-market private equity investors.
Reality: Over 2 million Latino businesses in the U.S. generate a total of more than $300 billion dollars in annual revenues and are growing 15% per year, on average. Those figures have attracted a number of forward-looking private equity funds, both large and middle-market.
What do you need to know to seize opportunity in this marketplace? And how do you get it without taking months or even years to get up to speed?
