It’s widely acknowledged that the financial services sector is the world’s largest in terms of earnings.  Less obvious is the fact that it’s also the least competitive in private equity circles.  In fact, the sector represented a mere 5% of all the private equity deals done in 2006.

Yet, improved understanding of its risks and opportunities together with its attractive growth metrics and the entry of more and more pools of capital have combined to spark an expanding interest in specific segments of the industry, such as consumer finance and the fragmented insurance sector.

Also, middle-market private equity firms are getting wiser about the risk/return tradeoffs available in financial services, i.e., though players may not always achieve home runs, they’re more likely to avoid strikeouts.
