At first glance, tough times seem to be looming for specialty distribution companies.

Distributors are scrambling to adapt to technology advances and price transparency, not to mention an uncertain economy.

But PE investors continue to invest and remain optimistic. Transactions continue to get completed in a variety of sectors -- building products, healthcare, technical products, chemicals, auto parts, and agribusiness equipment. Operating margins in these sectors generally remain  strong.  And so are their prospects for international revenues.

Bankers say that transaction multiples have shown little compression -- 10-12 times EBITDA for a premium compared to 8-10 times for a typical transaction.

Whether you're experienced or considering your first foray, you'll welcome the insights and information at The Capital Roundtable’s second annual conference on “Private Equity Investing in Specialty Distribution Companies,” being held in New York City on Thursday, September 15.

By attending this conference, you'll hear conference chairman, Ron Kuehl of Frontenac Company, and 20 other speakers address such granular questions as --

  • What are the best ways to find value in a frothy valuation environment?
  • How should investors aggressively drive value to better manage across economic cycles?
  • How does a specialty distributor get better margins in its product vertical?
  • What are the ways to use technology offensively to grow and defensively to combat margin destroying industry trends?
  • How can you ensure your distributor’s sales force remains a vital asset to the business -- and how do you make sure its performance keeps shining?
  • How will the healthcare distribution space continue to merit its popularity among investors?
  • What about specialty distribution in the building-products sector? In consumer staples?
  • Does your portfolio company have the most appropriate systems and technological tools for flawless execution?
  • How are catalog-driven specialty distributors faring with Amazon in the mix?
  • What’s the outlook for exclusive-distribution territories?
  • Is the specialty distribution industry likely to remain fragmented, or will it see larger and constantly expanding companies?
  • What are the best strategies for competing with aggressive corporate buyers?
