Consider. Downward pressure on raw materials is causing specialty chemical margins to become more attractive. Low cost oil and gas and chemical feedstocks are forcing commodity prices into steep declines. What’s more, China’s expansions into commodity chemicals -- methanol, benzene, chlorine, propylene, and ethylene – are further driving prices down.
The mega-merger of Dow Chemical and DuPont -- and other similar smaller deals, are part of a consolidation wave sweeping the chemicals sector. These deals are creating middle market opportunities to acquire forced divestitures in agriculture, material sciences, and other areas, due to antitrust rules.
Growing shareholder activism is also shaking up general chemical companies, creating opportunities for middle-market PE investors to acquire spinoffs deemed outside core competencies.
The enormous number of mid-sized specialty chemical firms in segments like coatings, adhesives, and sealants also creates opportunities for platform acquisitions followed by roll-ups that can be executed at attractive multiples, less than five times ebitda.
Look at Taminco Corp., a manufacturer of alkylamines and derivatives that started as a carve-out and grew by doing a roll-up.
