Food and beverage investors are busy altering their game plans as products that used to fill small niches have evolved into high-demand products that can support large manufacturing operations and significant brand investment.
Many consumers are paying much closer attention to what they eat -- and are even scrutinizing labels more than ever. From organic and natural products to gluten-free, soy-based, and other categories, they’re searching for healthy ingredients and not necessarily settling for yesterday’s market leader.
What’s more --
- Valuations are at a premium for food and beverage companies, compared to the S&P500, trading at a 29.6 percent premium in total enterprise value to EBITDA.
- The “buy local” movement continues to gain steam, with the majority of food and beverage spending coming from baby boomers that demand health benefits.
- Cash accounts of large food and beverage companies are growing, so many of them are in an acquisitive mode.
But, make no mistake – in this industry, distribution channels are the kings of the hill and, with retail chains consolidating, the stakes are high. You have to be tightly focused on expectations, because all it takes to lose a business is to lose one dominant customer.
You’ll understand how 2013 is different and how to position yourself to succeed when you attend The Capital Roundtable’s ENCORE conference --
“Private Equity Investing in Middle-Market Food & Beverage Companies,” being held in New York City on Thursday, April 18. .
Here are 6 important reasons you should attend this conference --
- Realize why good-for-you products are such an attractive opportunity for PE investors.
- Find out how social media is empowering consumers and impacting food and beverage company operations.
- Hear where commodity prices are heading, and what it means for food and beverage margins.
- Discover how and why private-label market share is rising toward European norms as the perceived value differential shrinks.
- Recognize that potential exits include not only U.S.-based PE firms and strategic buyers, but also foreign investors who want a footprint here.
- Learn the likelihood of new government regulations on natural and organic labeling.
We are excited to welcome returning chair Joan McCabe, Managing Partner at Brynwood Partners in Greenwich, Conn., a prominent middle-market private equity firm that acquires companies in the consumer sector with enterprise values between $25 and $125 million.
Joan McCabe joined the Brynwood III advisory committee in 1997 and upon the formation of Brynwood IV joined the firm full-time as a managing partner. She previously managed her own mergers and acquisitions advisory firm, and spent 15 years as an investment banker at Kidder Peabody, Drexel Burnham, and Paine Webber. She holds a BA in history from Yale and an MBA from Harvard.
She is joined by her colleague, Ian McTaggart. Ian joined Brynwood in 1996 and currently sits on Brynwood’s Executive Committee. He previously spent six years at Merrill Lynch, in both the mergers and acquisitions and the corporate finance departments. He holds a BS in business from Boston College and an MBA from Duke.
20 Food & Beverage Experts Guide You Through the Coming Trends
Year after year, this conference both fills the room and fills the need for fresh, usable, reliable content. This year is no exception with 4 panel discussions led by our chair and featuring shared insights from 20 top PE professionals in the food and beverage industry.
When you attend on April 18th, you will listen and learn from GPs, operating executives, investment bankers, lenders, consultants, and more -- offering real-world perspectives, lessons learned, and industry outlooks, plus insights on managing current portfolio companies.
Plus, you will find out about recent food and beverage deals that are representative of today’s exciting opportunities, including --
- Last year’s IPO of Annie’s natural foods backed by Solara Capital, which has held on to its robust gains.
- Brynwood Partners’ joint venture of Back to Nature Foods Company with Mondelez International, previously the snack division of Kraft.
- CastleGate Capital Advisors’ acquisition of custom vintner Crushpad, now renamed The Wine Foundry.
By attending this Capital Roundtable conference, you’ll hear how today’s most successful investors in food and beverage companies are finding winning deals and adding value to their current portfolio companies.
We’ll be answering such questions as --
- Which food and beverage product categories are likely to provide the best returns from new transactions?
- How should you evaluate commodity risk when purchasing companies today?
- Is consumer demand still high for value-priced products?
- As foods and nutritionals merge together, what is the short-term promise for “nutraceutical” providers?
- How critical is it that a solution be able to scale up to the mass market?
- How can you manage your portfolio companies to benefit from volume purchasing?
- What are the ways social media is affecting food and beverage companies, and how do you stay ahead of the curve?
- What are some of the pitfalls affecting manufacturers in how and where ingredients are sourced?
Excellent Networking Opportunities From Beginning To End
We’ve built ample time into the day’s agenda so you can --

- Share both ideas and business cards

- If you’re an attorney or advisor – Meet new potential clients
