In recent months, more and more PE investors have gotten excited about healthcare support organizations (HSOs) -- the fast-growing behind-the-scenes companies to whom medical practitioners now outsource their administrative minutiae so they can focus on helping their patients.
Middle-market PE firms add operational efficiencies, as well as needed capital. And they introduce new technologies and best practices for business functions.
HSOs provide a wide range of services such as billing and collections, government reimbursement oversight, coding, revenue cycle management, strategic planning, and marketing.
Examples of healthcare practices that turn to HSOs include dentists, dermatologists, veterinarians, physical therapists, wound care managers, specialty behavioral therapists, healthcare educators, dialysis centers, and emergency care centers.
Some forward-thinking PE firms are even branching into affiliated businesses -- e.g., Cressey recently acquired a chain of dental laboratories to make orthodontics, and Blue Wolf Capital owns Healthcare Laundry Systems. Even LPs are entering the field -- e.g., Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan invested in a physical therapy support organization.
