While the ramifications of the Affordable Care Act play out on the front pages, the key fact for healthcare investors is that “Obamacare” is the law – and eventually there will be 20 million brand-new insured Americans. 

For buyers, that means the time is ripe for investing in niche providers who will thrive under the new law. Conversely, for sellers, it may be a good time to exit current portfolio companies at today’s appealingly high valuations.


The metrics of 2014 and 2015 are highly positive --

  • The number of patients insured under government programs will rise from 40% today to over 55%.
  • Total spending on healthcare is projected to exceed $4.5 trillion by 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 5.8%.
  • High valuations — generally 1 to 1 1/2X the rest of the deal market — are fostering excellent returns for investors that choose the right opportunities.

Prior to joining Sagard, Anil was a managing director at Vestar Capital, a private equity fund with $7-billion under management. At Vestar, Anil evaluated and executed new investments and managed existing portfolio companies. While at Vestar he was chairman of Sunrise Medical and on the board of directors at Radiation Therapy Services, MediMedia, and DeVilbiss Healthcare.


Prior to Vestar Capital, Anil spent 15 years at Bain & Company, where he led strategy-consulting teams across a range of industries, including consumer products, industrials, and healthcare. In addition, he led Bain's undergraduate- and graduate-level recruiting efforts. He began his career at the investment banking firm of James D. Wolfensohn.


Anil holds an AB, summa cum laude, from Harvard, where he majored in theoretical economics and minored in computer science. He earned an MBA, with honors, from Harvard Business School.
