Thursday, June 7, 2012

8:00 am – 5:00 pm
New York City

Designed to Meet the Needs of GPs, LPs, & Managers of Buyout, Growth Equity, Mezzanine, & Lending Funds, as Well as Independent Sponsors, Operating Partners, Portfolio Company Managers, and the Bankers, Lawyers, Accountants,

& Other Advisors Who Support Them

Faculty | Schedule | Registration | Location | Sponsorship | Audio Package |

Whether you’re an experienced GP raising a follow-on fund, or you’re launching a fund for the first time, in 2012 and 2013 it’s going to be harder than ever for you to attract capital from institutional investors.

You can be successful -- but it sure isn’t going to happen just by networking.  Now’s the time you must seek good solid expert advice.

After all, you know that most pension funds, insurance companies, university and other endowments, sovereign wealth funds, and banks and trusts are pulling back.

They’re skeptical about considering emerging firms, cynical about management fees, and frustrated with new compliance regulations and costs.

And you know that the competition is ferocious.  (Even placement agents who make their livelihoods helping GPs are facing hard times.)

That’s why you’ll want to attend The Capital Roundtable’s thirteenth annual full-day

conference on the best practices for successfully “Raising Private Equity Funds

from Institutional Investors” being held in New York City on Thursday, June 7.

Plus we’ll make it an easy decision to sign up today with our money-saving Early

Bird Rate.  You can take advantage of a generous $400 discount when you respond

          before Friday, April 27.

As chair of this conference, there is no more knowledgeable leader than Sheryl Schwartz,

who has over 22 years of private equity investing experience from both sides of the table, both as a GP and as an institutional LP.

Our keynote presentations and four panel discussions feature 20 experienced experts -- including GPs with funds that they worked hard to create, and LPs who are offering to help you weather this storm.  They will share their real-world perspectives, lessons learned, and insights on fundraising activity for 2012 and 2013.

As a result, you’ll see why this conference for many years has earned the support of

           the International Limited Partners Association.

You can be confident that you can hear what LPs are thinking, what criteria they’re currently following, and what themes are catching their interest.

(For example, you may not have to change or dilute your fund’s strategy to make it attractive.  But you do have to learn how to present it in just the right way to make it appealing to the LP audience.)

Great Insights, Wonderful Advice, Time-Saving Tips

Sheryl Schwartz is with private equity and mezzanine debt fund management firm Perseus LLC, with offices in Washington D.C. and New York City, Sheryl is primarily focused on the mezzanine debt fund that will invest in small and medium sized companies and for managing investor relations. One of 3 partners on an SBIC Mezzanine Debt Fund including fundraising, sourcing and evaluating mezzanine and structured equity investment opportunities in connection with leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, and growth financings in lower middle-market companies as defined by the Small Business Administration.

Prior to joining Perseus in 2010, Sheryl headed the alternative investment team at TIAA-CREF, one of the most distinguished pension management firms. There she lead a team of 10 professionals and was responsible for all fund, and direct private equity co-investment, and mezzanine debt opportunities sourced from TIAA’s relationships with fund managers. She holds both a BS and an MBA in finance from New York University.

So whether you’re experienced or a first-timer, you’ll hear great advice on what you should be doing right now, such as:

  • Don’t shoot in the dark.  Study the techniques that have worked for successful GPs. Listen to advice from LPs who want to be helpful.  And develop a strategic fundraising plan based on recommendations from top tier placement agents who do this day in and day out.
  • Don’t grope for needles in a haystack.  Forget about cold calls to names published in expensive online directories.  And forget about matchmaking sessions in big-city ballrooms, where the odds of success are less than winning a state lottery.
  • Get creative with alternatives.  Need more credibility and track record? Consider starting out as an independent (f/k/a “fundless”) sponsor.  Going it alone?  Consider working with a headhunter to organize a team with specific collective expertise. Beating your head against a wall?  Consider raising a smaller fund to get started. Or revise your industry focus or fees or location or advisory board in your placement documents.
  • Reconsider your targets.  Maybe you don’t want to go to institutional investors at all.  You could look at family offices instead, who have a completely different manner of operating without concern about GAAP or capital charges.

You’ll learn how to differentiate yourself with a relevant fund theme, and how to hone your presentation so you can get a hearing with LPs.  How to get introduced to the right people in the right way, and how to do your homework and create your documents so you avoid wasting time and spinning your wheels.

We’ll also explain why choosing the proper channels is more important than ever.  For example, did you know that ironically, LPs generally avoid investing in funds that are too friendly with their senior management.

Register now to be assured of the timely answers to questions like these --

  • What is the current attitude of LPs toward middle-market private equity?
  • Are private equity allocations expected to be maintained or decreased for 2012?
  • What fund types are most appealing to today’s institutional investors?
  • How important is it to have a theme for your fund?
  • What are some of the key criteria to be used when choosing a placement agent today?
  • Is this a good time or not to be a first-time fund manager?
  • Which institutional investors are more approachable than others?
  • Who are the fund managers that have done superior jobs of differentiating their funds?
  • Why are the most important points you must make in your presentations?
  • What non-traditional fundraising paths can be fruitful for middle-market GPs?
  • And much, much more.
