Private equity investors are nervous these days about middle-market defense & government services companies.  That’s because all levels of governments -- federal, state, local -- and all their agencies are suffering mightily from budget deficits.

Nonetheless, there’s good news.  Investment activity is expanding in niches most likely to be sheltered from funding cuts -- data analytics, health IT, cloud computing -- to name just a few.

These mission-critical pockets of opportunity, where government must often spend money just to keep pace with the private sector, belong on middle-market investors’ radars.

What’s more, with strong demand for the services these companies provide, the outlook is usually bright regardless of what may occur after the November elections.

So while Uncle Sam may be doing more with less, private equity investors in defense & government services companies can do more than ever.

You’ll discover where the 2012 growth lies at The Capital Roundtable’s all-NEW

conference on “Private Equity Investing in Defense & Government Services

Companies” held in New York City on Thursday, July 19.

Sponsored by Jenner & Block LLP and McGladrey.

Plus you can take advantage of a money-saving recruitment bonus.  Sign up for this

conference before Friday, June 8, and you’ll receive our special Early Bird Rate of

          $400 off the normal price.

To chair this timely conference, we’re delighted to welcome Michael Lustbader, partner at Arlington Capital Partners -- a middle-market private equity firm with more than $1.5 billion of committed capital in Washington D.C.

At Arlington Capital, Michael is responsible for investing in defense and aerospace, government contracting, outsourced business services and software, and IT services.

He’s been involved in all of Arlington’s investments in this sector, including Novetta Solutions, a provider of identity resolution, cyber security, and data analytics to the intelligence community, Compusearch, a federal procurement software firm, Iron Data, a government business process management firm, and Apogen Technologies, a federal IT contractor.

Prior to Arlington, Michael worked at Lazard Frères in its telecommunications and technology practice.  He received an AB magna cum laude from Harvard College.

20 Defense & Government Services Experts Provide A Complete One-Day Briefing

Along with Michael, four panel discussions will feature 20 private equity experts in defense & government services companies, including GPs, portfolio company operating executives, investment bankers, lenders, consultants, and more.

They will share their real-world perspectives, lessons learned, and industry outlooks, including insights on recent deal activity and managing current portfolio companies.

You’ll hear why one area where the government is ahead of the curve is cybersecurity,

where since 9/11 new spending priorities have benefited those companies providing

next-generation solutions to protect vital computer systems and track financial

transactions of terror suspects.  Many of the large prime government contactors have

not been able to move quickly on their own to develop these capabilities, and have

          turned to acquisitions instead.

Another area includes companies that help government agencies handle today’s

increased demands for oversight and accountability.  This is a trend that is not going

away -- both political parties agree on its necessity for eliminating fraud and abuse --

and it’s healthy for the country in the long run.  Rather than throw people and money at

problems, governments are starting to employ IT solutions to save money over time.

Entering this space for the first time can be tricky, because there are a host of status designations and cryptic abbreviations to master.  Company ownership plays a greater role.  Contracting procedures are far from streamlined.  Funding dollars come from multiple pockets.

That’s why you’ll welcome hearing how to avoid these pitfalls and make transactions in confidence.

Just some of the most recent defense & government services deals include --

  • Providence Equity Partners’ take private of SRA International, a specialist in air surveillance, cyber security, disaster response planning, and IT services.
  • Veritas Capital’s add-on acquisition of the federal division of CYBER Inc. -- a provider of enterprise software applications and support -- to portfolio company CRGT Inc.
  • Excellere Partners’ add-on acquisition of Frontline Solutions Corp. -- a provider of intelligence analysis and software engineering -- to portfolio company ASI Government.
  • LLR Partners’ acquisition Paragon Technology Group, a leading provider of strategic technology solutions.
  • Arlington Capital Partners’ purchase of FGM, Inc. and White Oak Technologies Inc. to create Novetta Solutions, providing data analytics, cloud computing and cyber security.
  • Frontenac portfolio company Salient Federal Solutions’ acquisition of ATS Corp., providing systems development, systems integration and IT infrastructure management.
  • Snow Phipps Group portfolio company Acentia’s purchase of 2020 Co., a leading provider of enterprise technology and performance optimization solutions.

And we’ll examine the federal government’s move to the cloud -- using virtual platforms for computing, data storage, and networking to bring greater efficiency to many-layered departments.  The Office of Management and Budget has a new “Cloud First” policy, and mission-critical agencies including the NSA, CIA and DIA are all on board.

Register now to get the answers to important questions like these --

  • What makes the defense & government services industry so attractive to middle‑market investors?
  • Where are the best opportunities in the sector for 2012, and conversely, which areas are facing the steepest budget cuts?

  • How eager are lenders to finance defense & government services deals?
  • How does economic turnaround relate to the defense & government services sector?

  • And much, much more.
