With the surge of brand-consciousness, apparel and footwear are categories that more and more  middle-market investors are studying.

Success stories -- and there are many -- are happening as private equity firms successfully match demographic trends with business trends.

And while fashion trends are obviously fickle (ask any teenager!), fashion basics -- e.g., premium denim jeans, active wear, athletic shoes -- are where sustainable growth can be found.

Consider --

  • Investment in this space increased nearly ten-fold in 2012 from the previous year -- totaling $5.5 billion -- according to Dealogic.
  • The fall-winter-spring-summer cycle has given way to fashion brands issuing new designs as many as 12 times a year, i.e., making less inventory, hence taking less risk.
  • Stellar sales growth is increasingly found at the midpoint of the market, where price tags range from $100 to $1,000.
  • This marketplace is less about designer labels, and more about strong brand names that are becoming lifestyle brands that resonate with consumers.

You’ll discover why so many investors are including apparel and footwear in their portfolios when you attend The Capital Roundtable’s BRAND-NEW conference -- “Private Equity Investing in Apparel & Footwear Companies,” in New York City on Thursday, May 2.

Here are 5 important reasons you should attend this conference --

  • Learn how and where to develop the domain expertise you need to succeed -- particularly if your own fashion sense is limited.
  • Hear why apparel and footwear companies are all adopting multi‑channel strategies to reach consumers.
  • Discover how to avoid the real estate trap -- where an apparel or footwear company moves away from what they do best.
  • Learn why apparel and footwear is a way to “play” the retail sector without investing in a retail company.
  • Recognize the opportunities still available in private label apparel and footwear.

Find out how industry leaders are successfully matching demographic trends with business trends.

As chair of this conference, we’re delighted to welcome Charles Larkin, General Partner at Webster Capital LLC, the hugely-respected middle-market private equity firm in Waltham, outside of Boston.

I am General Partner of Webster Capital LLC, a middle-market private equity firm, based in Waltham, Mass.  I have 30 years of experience working with branded companies ranging in size from ten million to over one billion in revenues, in such sectors as women’s and men’s fashion, premium denim, athletic shoes, and a variety of retailers focused on apparel.

Prior to co-founding Webster Capital in 2002, I worked in leveraged lending at JP Morgan Chase, consulted at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and helped lead the mergers and acquisitions and equity capital markets efforts in the branded consumer sectors at Tucker Anthony.  I received my undergraduate degree from Colgate University and my MBA from the University of Virginia.

20 Apparel & Footwear Experts Who Understand the Fortunes of Fashion

Led by our chair, this conference will bring you four panel discussions and the combined insights of 20 top PE professionals in the apparel and footwear industry.

You will listen and learn from GPs, operating executives, investment bankers, lenders, consultants, and more -- offering real-world perspectives, lessons learned and industry outlooks, and insights on managing current portfolio companies.

Plus, you will find out about recent apparel and footwear deals that are representative of today’s exciting opportunities, including --

  • Winona Capital Management’s sale of men’s clothing brand Peter Millar to Swiss Strategic Compagnie Financiere Richemont.
  • Goode Partners’ sale of luxury retailer Intermix to Gap for $130 million.
  • TA Associates’ acquisition of Dutch LLC, parent company to contemporary women’s brands Joie, Equipment, and Current/Elliott

By attending this Capital Roundtable conference, you’ll hear how today’s most successful investors in apparel and footwear companies are reaping significant profits and adding value to their current portfolio companies.

We’ll be answering such questions as --

  • Which apparel and footwear categories should provide the most favorable investment opportunities?
  • What are the ways social media is changing the game for apparel and footwear brands, and how to you tap into the buzz?
  • How do you find the sweet spot in the interplay between wholesale, retail, and online?
  • Are department stores still relevant, or are consumers moving to other buying options?
  • How important is it for apparel and footwear brands to have their own showcase stores?
  • Why is China taking a greater interest in acquiring U.S.-based apparel and footwear companies?
  • How eager are lenders to finance deals in this sector?
  • What are the most important things a firm has to get right when exiting an apparel or footwear investment?
